NEWS: The Council of Isles Conference send solidarity to Alliance for Choice

‘Following a successful Council of the Isles Conference 2016, delegates from ICTU, STUC, WTUC and TUC wish to send a message of support and solidarity to Alliance for Choice in the campaign for progressive abortion legislation and reproductive rights.  The Council of the Isles very much welcomed the NIC-ICTU Women’s Committee report on the case for abortion law reform and fully support the ‘Trust Women’ campaign, which has brought the issue of reproductive rights to the fore.  We are dismayed and angered that restrictive access to abortion prevails across the Isles, resulting in thousands of women having to travel at their own cost to access abortion healthcare provision.  In November 2015, Judge Horner ruled abortion law in Northern Ireland incompatible with human rights and we find it wholly unacceptable that despite the ruling, women in Northern Ireland are continuing to live with regressive and restrictive legislation that sees them discriminated against and treated so very differently from many women in the remainder of the Isles.  We would take this opportunity to add our voices to the groundswell of voices calling for the Assembly to ‘Trust Women’ and legislate fully for a woman’s right to choose.’

Alliance for Choice are delighted to receive this support from across Scotland, Wales, England, and the Isle of Man and are pleased once again to have our #trustwomen campaign highlighted by our comrades in the Trade Union movement.
